Description: |
CN local heads southwest past the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts via the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 28 Jun. '15. This view is from the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years. This is a plaza between an office building to the right and clinic to the left. This is the approximate location of the ca. 1871 WC (later SOO) depot which stood on the south (right) side of the tracks at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. It was built on pilings in the south end of Little Lake Butte des Morts, these tracks were originally on a trestle over the water. All of the earth under and to the left (north) of these rails is landfill, deposited in the south end of the lake by the paper mills starting in the 1950s. That former landfill is now Arrowhead Park. The depot was converted to a freight house when a new depot was constructed on Sherry St. in 1891. The depot that stood here was demolished or moved between 1906 and 1913. |

Description: |
CN local crosses Millview Dr. as it nears the Yard Limit of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 29 Jun. '15. An Affinity clinic is partially visible on the left, behind the train. It occupies part of the site of the former P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years. Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down, demolition was completed in May 2009. The metal structure over the train is a remnant of the steam pipes that used to connect the paper mill to the defunct and partially demolished Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant), behind me. |

Patriotic CN 9455 on Independence Day '15 |
Description: |
A patriotic U.S. CN local crew clears Oak St./Hwy. E (formerly Guard St.) via former SOO rails as they service Waupaca Foundry, Plant 1, at Waupaca, WI on Independence Day, 4 Jul. '15. I wish could have captured a better photograph of the American flags they mounted on the cab of their locomotive today. One of the flags had become partially detached during their journey from Neenah to Waupaca, but one of the crewmembers climbed up to refasten it when they had cause to pause during their labors here. The interesting old building on the left is the remnants of the Moore-O-Matic (Chamberlain Group, Inc.) facility, a seemingly abandoned industry that received rail service at some point. |

Description: |
CN MoW equipment, WC 9120 ballast tamper, parked on a rarely used former SOO spur that parallels Miller St. at Ware St. at Waupaca, WI on Independence Day, 4 Jul. '15. This is one of a pair of spurs that used to run side-by-side parallel to Miller St. and south of Ware St. to service numerous industries. Just out of frame to the left is where a neat, old feed mill stood for about a hundred years or so, until it was demolished earlier this year or late 2014. Another spur ran next to the feed mill. That spur was shared by SOO and GB&W and also crossed Ware St. to service industries along N. Oborn St. |

GTW 4905 |
Description: |
I was hoping to catch some road power leaning into this curve, so I became excited when I heard a train approaching in the distance. I paced back and forth along this embankment searching for the ideal angle. I was a little disappointed when the train entered the viewfinder because it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but any train is better than no train. Here a CN locomotive, GTW 4905, approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye as it returns to the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 Jun. '15. The north and east legs of the wye are in the background. The defunct and partially demolished Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) is on the left. Opened in Jan. '98, it has stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The demolition has been on hold for a few weeks due to a contract dispute between the owner and the demolition contractor. |

IC 3137 |
Description: |
CN local crosses the South Branch of the Manitowoc River via the former MILW bridge as it pulls into Chilton, WI on 26 Jul. '15. The early village was originally named Stantonville, in honor of Moses Stanton, founder. The land was purchased by John Marygold in 1852 and he changed the name to Chilington, his hometown in England. He sent a request to the county seat, then Stockbridge, to make the name change official. A miscommunication resulted in the middle syllable being lost to history and the name became Chilton. |

The facility in the background used to receive rail service, but does not at the moment. It is currently shared by JTD Enterprises, Inc. and Briess Malt & Ingredients Co. JTD was preceded by Midwest Machine Co., previously Mirro-Foley Co., originally Aluminum Specialty Co., a.k.a. Chilton Aluminum. Aluminum Specialty Co. was founded at Manitowoc, WI, they decided to build a second factory at Chilton in 1919, 2 stories, 60 by 200 ft., at a cost of $75,000 ($40,000 for the building and the remainder for equipment). The former MILW depot stood just out of frame to the right. The early village was originally named Stantonville, in honor of Moses Stanton, founder. The land was purchased by John Marygold in 1852 and he changed the name to Chilington, his hometown in England. Description: |
CN local crosses the Fox River via former C&NW bridge in the Flats at Appleton, WI on 27 Jul. '15. It looks like a solitary railroad bridge from a distance, but there are actually two bridges a few feet apart. The second, nearer, one is the former MILW bridge, now sans rails. Part of the Oneida Skyline Bridge helps to frame the scene. Local was headed back to the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction after servicing eastern Appleton, Kimberly and Combined Locks. |
