Nice example of the Hoosier iconic J-1 class Mikado built by Alco-Brooks in August of 1912 (serial #51666). The exact day in 1937 was not given for the photo. Note the Monon offfset cupotla wooden caboose behind. The Monon started retiring this class in 1939 to make room for diesels and with Eric Reinert's help (see comment below), this loco lasted until February of 1948. Specs - 63" drivers, 170 psi boiler pressure, 28x30" cylinder, engine weight of 286,000 lb, tractive effort of 53,947 lb. T.W. Cassidy photo |
