The Cumberland City turn approaches the Cumberland River drawbridge at Clarksville. This bridge has an interesting history. In 1906 the locomotive, tender, mail car, and baggage car of a northbound passenger train went into the river when the engineer ran through the open draw. A similar instance occurred in 1947 involving a local freight train that was dropping a cut off cars at the old Clarksville freight depot (which was located on the opposite side of the track from where I am standing). |
