LIRR 9548
One of the Long Island Railroad's former M-1 MU cars, constructed by Budd as part of a large order between 1967 and 1973 to replace aging equipment. These state of the art cars in their day have since been replaced by new M-7 cars in recent years.

These were delivered in two groups, the first was 9001-9620, then a second group, 9621 thru 9770. As I recall-I lived in Little Neck on the Port Washington Branch-they started showing up in mid 1968. They had a lot of teething problems, since their wiring was a lot more complex that that of the MP 54's, 72's and 75's they replaced. I recall on several occasions a train of M 1's being pushed east in afternoon rush by a train of the older cars. Hard to believe these cars are now over 40 years old; I still think of them as the "new" cars.
