Within a few minutes the train went into emergency after some drunk bum decided to play chicken at the West 13 railroad crossing. The conductor rang up the Desk 3 dispatcher to get a hold of the Carbondale Police. Out of danger, 336 started moving south again. I was heading back home down Washington Street when all of a sudden heard the train screeching to a stop, and the sound of air escaping. Turns out the train broke a knuckle 30-35 cars back from the head end at the intermediate signal across from the Southern Illinoisan. I made a u turn back to the town square to inform the crew about their problem. Offered to give the conductor a ride back to save him a lot of walking and time (the train had work at Cairo next). Then took him back to the head end to get a knuckle off the 1031, took him back to put it on. The knuckle didn't seem like it wanted to work so I took him back up to grab a knuckle off the 5729. Took him back again and by this time a CN signal inspector showed up. Second knuckle worked and 336 was ready to depart. The signal inspector gave him a ride back up front and I took off towards the Amshack to get some departing shots. Not before the conductor gave me $5 for my honorary services.
