The essence. As late as 1951, there were some 54 first class schedules, twenty four of which passed MG between 11pm and 6am. Ten years later, the schedules were more than cut in half. That one time volume with all of the freight traffic and helper movements associated therewith accounts for the necessity of an interlocking mid-grade on the east slope of The Mountain, hence the presence of this architecturally superb block station deep in the Allegheny forest.
