CTA 3219
Title:  CTA 3219
Description:  An inbound CTA train catches us right on the other side of the I94 overpass. After this, we broke away from CTA territory and made our way to Union, IL and the Illinois Railway Museum. Those photos will be included in a separate album.

UP 4804
Title:  UP 4804
Description:  The museum was awesome! Lots of great old equipment to admire. We will definitely be making a visit back soon. With Janesville and the Wisconsin Southern on the brain for tomorrow, we would be staying the evening at the Hampton Inn on the east side of Rockford for the night. Rail action into Rockford is pretty sparse, only with UP, CP, and the IRM operating local moves in and out of the city on a fairly regular basis. Most of UPs traffic to the area comes off a nightly road train in and out of Belvidere, which just happened to be building for the outbound when we got into town. Tonights MBEBE is being built with the yard crew with a pair of SD70Ms. The MBEBE crew will come OD at 9 PM that evening to make its nightly journey to and from the city.

UP 4804 and UPY 705
Title:  UP 4804 and UPY 705
Description:  The yard crew finishes building the MBEBE as the yard job sits off to the left with a pair of GP15s. Due to the light action on this line, UP stores a good amount of autoracks and TOFC flats out here, which come and go about once or twice a week. Tonights MBEBE appears to be taking some autoracks back to the city. There might be some sort of mixing center around here somewhere but neither of us are familiar enough with the location to know for sure. By this time, with no other action happening, we decided to head for the hotel and check in. There wasnt much time left in the day so instead of heading south on I39 to Rochelle, we decided to stick a little closer to town and see if CP would send anything at Davis Jct. Unfortunately, the nearest train that would have passed was clear out at Savanna, and it would have been well after dark before it showed up there. So, with that, we decided to call it a day. We picked up Chick-Fil-A across the street for supper and turned in for the night. Next morning, Janesville was on the agenda!

WAMX 6023, WAMX 6031, WAMX 6029, and WAMX 5900
Title:  WAMX 6023, WAMX 6031, WAMX 6029, and WAMX 5900
Description:  It had been a long time since I had shot anything on the Wisconsin Southern, while my Dad had never shot anything on the Wisconsin Southern, so we were both excited to start our day along the railroad headquarters in Janesville. CP and UP were both supposed to run their transfer jobs to the WSOR that day as well, so we were expecting to get some pretty decent morning action. However, when we arrived, everything was quiet, but plenty of engines sitting around the shops. Just like G&W has been doing with the GEs, WAMX purchased a number of larger six axle locomotives, these being older SD60 variants from the UP. Some of them have been repainted, as can be seen with the triclops SD60M to the right, but some have not been, as can be seen by the units in the yard.

Title:  WAMX 6023 and WAMX 6029
Description:  A closer shot of the repainted triclops, sitting with a triclops still in its UP yellow. One thing I will have to say; I like the new paint, but Im glad Watco didnt put too much patchwork on these units like LTE had done when G&W was thinking about going the EMD route. They still look pretty good.

Title:  WAMX 6023 and WAMX 4219
Description:  A nice comparison of the new and old paint schemes side by side as L353 passes the repainted triclops. A lot of fans that I knew were not big fans of the new paint scheme when it was finally revealed. I think it is pretty unique.

Title:  WAMX 4173
Description:  After L353 was in, we went to the west side of the yard and found J1 kicking around some cars. The last time I was here, they were using a Geep on this job. Apparently some of the SD40-2s have been given RC duties now.

WAMX 6022
Title:  WAMX 6022
Description:  We heard a warrant for WSOR T4 a while back. Soon enough, we heard them give up their warrant and contact the yard to bring their train in. We moved down a few streets to photograph the train by some interesting buildings. Little did we know, however, they were apparently going to do a power swap. They left their train behind on the Rock River bridge and ended up coming into the yard light. Another trio of SD60Ms were in charge of T4, one of the other repainted ones on the point.

Title:  WAMX 6028
Description:  After attaching to the cars and doing their various break tests and air tests and such, the train rolls around the curve off the Rock River Bridge and brings the train into the yard. Like I said before, the minimal patch work done on these locomotives was a lifesaver for a photographer!

WAMX 4219
Title:  WAMX 4219
Description:  T4 passes the siding switch signal as the train continues into the yard. By this time it was getting fairly late in the afternoon. With no signs of UP or CP showing up, we decided to follow the CP back to Rockford. We never did end up finding them, so we went and grabbed some lunch at Dairy Queen in Aboite and headed back into Illinois. We were pretty happy with our WSOR catches. Hope to come back here soon!

Title:  OMLX 3500
Description:  The only corporate Illinois Railway Unit on the Ilinois Railway roster sits in downtown Rockford. Apparently they did work today, and Thursdays are a regular day for them. Something to remember in the future. The Omnitrax reporting mark has just been recently put on this unit, as photos I've seen of it from recent it has not had it on the side.

BNSF 7825
Title:  BNSF 7825
Description:  With no signs of CN, CP, or UP sending any more traffic, we decided it was time to continue south. BNSF had a few trains to run through Rochelle, so we made a dash for Flagg Center. Unfortunately, Z-SSECHC2-28 beat us at Skare Road, but thankfully it did have rear DPU. So, not all was lost.

BNSF 5216
Title:  BNSF 5216
Description:  Following right behind the Z Train was U-EOANTW5-30, which was extremely unique, as it was the weed control train. Neither of us had ever seen BNSFs weed control train before. The lead H2 Dash 9 has LED lights and a camera equipped to the front deck to allow the train to spray after dark too it looks like. Pretty cool!

UP 6284
Title:  UP 6284
Description:  Unfortunately, Rochelle is not quite the hotspot that it used to be. With PSR, the UP has lost more than half of the trains that used to run on it. Most of which have been combined with other trains. That ended up giving us enough time to check into the Comfort Inn in town where we would be staying for the evening. But, the action did pick back up soon after as UP CATWS rolled into town. This coal train is a good example of a PSR move; two trains combined into one. The head 100 cars were marked for WEPX, two more units in the middle, another 100 company coal cars, then a rear DPU. No day is a good day to run a double coal train.

UP 2660
Title:  UP 2660
Description:  We decided to move a little eastward to get out of Rochelle since BNSF had nothing anywhere close behind or ahead of the Z Train. Creston was an ideal spot to shoot some trains for the last few hours of the day. Unfortunately, UP MCHNP caught us before we could get into town. Thankfully, the out the window shot of the train passing the landfill ended up not being too bad.

UP 1995
Title:  UP 1995
Description:  While we had intended on moving out of Rochelle anyway for more train action, one of the main reasons we decided to move was because we wanted a good backdrop of UP MWGWG heading east back to West Chicago, as todays WGWG was featuring UP 1995, the Chicago and North Western Heritage Unit, on the front. The unit had been at IRM C&NW Days the weekend prior, and now had been bouncing between the MWGWG and the MBEBE. Sure enough, not long after the stack train, MWGWG came screaming east by the Creston grain elevator with a very clean UP 1995 on the head end! The last time I shot this unit was way back in 2012 in Nebraska, so it was neat to finally get to see it again, especially so clean! My Dad had seen it a bit more recently, as back in 2017 it lead a northbound on the NS through home while I was at school. Glad we both got to see it together on this trip!

Title:  WF Hall Printing 5
Description:  Both railroads went dead after MWGWG so we headed back into Rochelle and grabbed some supper at Culvers. After taking it back to the room and eating, we decided to spend the remainder of the evening at the railroad park in town. WF Hall Printing 5 sits on display by one of the former C&NW signals that used to guard the diamond here.

NS 4327
Title:  NS 4327
Description:  Just as it looked like we werent going to get any trains to close the day out, UP MCBCH keyed up G3 and the dispatcher and told them they were ready to go east. Right at sunset, the train slowly rolled out of G3 with a solo NS AC44C6M on the front. NS is paying back quite a few power hours to the UP after they themselves leased a ton of UP locomotives back at the end of 2022 and into 2023. With that, our day came to an end. Another great day of railfanning! The following day will begin in Rochelle, and end in Dubuque.

Description:  We went back to sit at the park. Still nothing from either railroad. But, after a while, we did hear some talking on the scanner. Not from UP or BNSF, rather the Burlington Junction. Sure enough, the GP15 had been fired up and had a decent cut of cars in tow. And, not too long after, the train began to move toward the BNSF interchange.

BNSF 726
Title:  BNSF 726
Description:  Along with the Burlington Junction working Americold, BNSF R-CHI476-31 came down to the interchange point as well. Despite not having normal standard cab local power, the train was featuring a Fakebonnet this week, which, even if its not normal local power, is still better than the trailing GEVO behind it.

BNSF 6958
Title:  BNSF 6958
Description:  The engines cross Caron Road and approach the Americold Switch. The train would not pull cars from Americold, but they would grab interchange cars from the UP and BJRY in the yard to the north of the crossing.

UP 1417
Title:  UP 1417
Description:  Despite the UP being slow, it was about to get busy, and busy with some very special trains in the mix as well. We thought catching UP 1995 leading yesterday was a solid catch, but a lot of things were about to be added on top of that. UP 1111 was leading a westbound coal drag, a brand new VIA set from Siemens was coming east, and UP 6706, the last active CNW patch unit, was leading a westbound manifest. Since a broad shot would be our best bet for a shot of UP 1111, we decided to head back up to the overpass east of Flagg. Our first train was not UP 1111, however. UP LPG04 came east by the elevator with a solo geep and a very friendly engineer who gave us a pretty good hornshow.

UP 7826
Title:  UP 7826
Description:  Hotshot UP ZG2LT stops briefly at the crossover at G3 before proceeding west under the overpass. Not sure why they stopped, but my guess was either they had an open door on one of the containers or they needed some paperwork for work enroute somewhere.

UP 1111
Title:  UP 1111
Description:  Shortly behind ZG2LT followed CHIBV with the Powered by Our People unit on the front. A pretty neat catch. Definitely not expected on this trip! This is the second time Ive seem this unit, first time leading. And the first time Dad has seen it altogether.
