Usually, the trees near a river or lake hold their leaves longer than elsewhere, due to the proximity of a good water source. Not here, apprently. Must be a northeast thing. The northbound 181 rolls its 27 autos, one of them articulated, and 82 grain hoppers north across the Illinois River. |

I chased down to Cave Springs, since there was still enough daylight on this first day of standard time. I had beaten the coal train here, despite some slowpokes along the way. I checked the northbound home signal, finding it was showing a restricting indication, and the switch was lined for the siding. Cool, a northbound in the picture. I grabbed a shot of the board, and headed for Bunch, hoping to intercept the northbound there. |

The coal train has arrived at the Cave Springs siding, and is holding the main in the distance. The dispatcher is going to run the lite power through the siding, an easier, and faster move, than having the 125 cars of coal taking both switches at 15 MPh for the entire length of the train. Now that the switch is lined for the lite power move at both ends, the signal displays a medium clear. Hell have a high green at the other end. |
