Album Info: | Here is a 43-page article by Mr. James J.D. Lynch, Jr., entitled "Overview Of The History And Development Of The Pennsylvania Railroad's Altoona Shops."
It was published originally in the Autumn 1996 issue of "The Keystone" magazine, pages 18-60.
"On the eve of the PRR's centennial, the Altoona Works had expanded by 1945 to over 217 acres from a small cluster of shop buildings which in the early 1850's occupied about 15 acres. Altoona Works employment in 1945 stood at 12,500." (Page 59)
N.B.: This article consists largely of excerpts derived from two sources: Mr. James Dredge's 1879 book entitled "The Pennsylvania Railroad" and Mr. H.W. Schotter's 1926 monograph entitled "Altoona Works."
