Album Info:Most of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the fall of 2015, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 2861 and CN 2892
Title:  CN 2861 and CN 2892
Description:  CN unit train of 2-bay covered hoppers approaches the Main St. overpass as it rolls past a halted mixed freight on the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 27 Sep. '15. The large Clearwater Paper Corp. mill (originally Lakeside Paper Co., most commonly known as Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview Mill), which receives rail service, looms background left. The partially demolished Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) is visible in the background. Opened in Jan. '98, it has stood idle since 15 Jun. '13. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties, next to the 5th and 6th covered hoppers, rest atop the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

SOO AAR Crossing Inventory Tag
Title:  SOO AAR Crossing Inventory Tag
Description:  An interesting remnant of a previous owner of the CN, former SOO, rails at N. Lake St. in Neenah, WI on 27 Sep. '15. It's a label for AAR Crossing Inventory No. 690 240 J. I've passed this grade crossing countless times but never noticed it. The only reason I saw it was because I was riding my bicycle and stopped next to this telephone pole when a train went by. The Wis. Telephone Co. tag is another interesting relic; that company faded into history in 1984.

CN 8886 and CN 2245
Title:  CN 8886 and CN 2245
Description:  CN mixed freight heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Stroebe in the Town of Menasha, WI on 4 Oct. '15. After a stop at Neenah it was headed toward Green Bay. The train is passing through the construction zone for the new, second bridge to carry Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441, a.k.a. the Tri-County Expressway, over Little Lake Butte des Morts. The original Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, which opened to traffic on 30 Nov. 1975, will carry westbound traffic and the new bridge will carry eastbound traffic. The original ramp connecting northbound Hwy. 41 to eastbound Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441, the now bare steel beams above the locomotives, is being dismantled and the approach for the new bridge will occupy its spot. The former SOO rails, connecting Neenah to Shawano, are partially visible at far right.

CN 2123 and CN 5662
Title:  CN 2123 and CN 5662
Description:  CN mixed freight emerges from a tree line and approaches the Hwy. 10 overpass as it heads northwest via former SOO rail at Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI (not to be confused with Village of Clayton in Polk Co., WI) on 11 Oct. '15. Train is about to pass what used to be the Center Rd. grade crossing, but that road was truncated short of the tracks during the Hwy. 10 expansion and relocation several years ago. The headlight arrangement on the lead locomotive appears unusual.

IC 9625
Title:  IC 9625
Description:  CN local momentarily fouls Washington St. in order to service U.S. Paper Mills Corp. at Menasha, WI on 11 Oct. '15. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. The dark tan brick structure rising behind the paper mill is the stage house of the Brin Theater, which will hopefully see restoration someday. I am pretty sure it is the last surviving classic theater in the Fox Cities.

Title:  WSOR 216, WSOR 203, WSOR 107, MP 642902
Description:  A trio of WSOR MoW ballast cars (at least two of them are obviously former SOO cars) and a MP gondola spotted on former C&NW rails at Reed St. at Plymouth, WI on 17 Oct. '15. This spur, a remnant of the former C&NW mainline, was re-installed in the last couple of years. These new rails are part of the ongoing rehabilitation of the line to Kohler, WI. The active former MILW rails are partially visible on the right. The tall, white, masonry structure is an old creamery. I don't know who owned it originally, but previous owners include Plymouth Refrigerator Co., Kraft Foods, and Glacial Transit and Storage, not necessarily in that order.

WSOR 3809, WSOR 3813, and WSOR 3803
Title:  WSOR 3809, WSOR 3813, and WSOR 3803
Description:  WSOR local parked, silent and dark, on the former MILW rails on the north side of Hwy. MM at Rhine Mills in the Town of Rhine, Sheboygan Co., WI on 17 Oct. '15. The small community of Rhine Mills was adjacent to a quarry and lime kiln built by the Sheboygan Valley Land and Lime Co. I don’t know if there was a station here, but there was a spur off to service the quarry and lime kiln. Rhine Mills included a school, saw mill, grain mill, blacksmith, general store, saloon, boarding house, et al. The remnants of the lime kilns still stand and are easily visible from the hwy. about 1200 feet of west of the grade crossing. This site was approximately Milepost 148 on MILW’s Milwaukee to Iron Mountain line. I had encountered this train at Elkhart Lake earlier in the day. I did not stick around there because I thought this train would soon be on its way back toward Plymouth and points south. I waited in Plymouth, hoping to shoot the train as it passed the former C&NW and MILW depots there, for 5 hours but the train never came through. After giving up and heading home, I was surprised, and disappointed, to discover it parked here. Oh well.

Title:  GTW 6228 and GTW 6221
Description:  CN local passes Milepost 214 and approaches State St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails along the backside of College Ave. at Appleton, WI on 19 Oct. '15. The large brick building behind the locomotive is Good Company, a restaurant established in 1980. The building originally housed the Marshall Paper Co., a.k.a. Marshall Bros. Wholesale Paper, founded in 1893 by Simon and Samuel G. Marshall, father and son. Samuel's brothers Louis J. and Harry M. later joined the company, whose products included wrapping paper and printing paper. It used to receive rail service, the spur was on the north side of the building. That spur crossed Richmond St. and also serviced the Marshall & Hammel Grain Elevator & Warehouse that stood where Walgreen's parking lot is now. That spur included a switchback to service J. Fountain Lumber Co., which stood north of the main line on the west side of State St., just out of frame to right.

Title:  IC 9601
Description:  CN local approaches Towmen Rd. as it hauls 34 cars southwest via former C&NW rails at Shawano Junction in the Town of Menasha, WI on 24 Oct. '15. I'm not sure of the train's origin or destination, but it did not appear to be one of the normal locals. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW mainline through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails, the rails in the foreground.

Smooth Grade Crossings at Manawa, WI
Title:  Smooth Grade Crossings at Manawa, WI
Description:  It looks like the residents of Manawa, WI have had their complaints of rough grade crossings addressed. Unfortunatel{ the solution does not seem to bode well for the future of rail service there in the near term. This view is looking southeast from Depot St. along the recently truncated CN, former GB&W, rails at Manata, WI on 30 Nov. '15. On the drive toward Manawa, I was thrilled to see the red flag at Northport had been removed, but my elation suddenly turned to disappointment as I pulled into Manawa on this day. The tracks have been removed from all of the grade crossings in town, the passing siding here has been removed, and the tracks leading from the mainline into downtown and Sturm Foods have been removed. Maybe the fact that the entire line has'not been torn up still offers a glimmer of hope for a return of rail service, maybe I am naïve. You can find a similar view in my Northeast WI, Summer 2013 album at http://www.rrpicturearchives.ndt/archiveThumbs.aspx?id=96037. Unfortunately the GBW 1001 40' steel box car which rested at upper left for decades has been removed. Was it saved somehow, or was it scrapped? I believe the ca. ‘51 cinderblock GB&W Manawa depot was located just beyond the station sign. A photo can be found at: http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/.

At one time there also a spur along the right side of the white building, which has received some new metal siding since the last time I photographed it. There was a red flag located this side of the bridge over the Little Wolf River, but it is obviously not needed at the moment. The Tomorrow River State Trail starts on the opposite side of the bridge and runs to Plover, where active rails resume. Maybe the fact that the entire line has not been torn up still offers a glimmer of hope for a return of rail service, maybe I am naïve.

Smooth Grade Crossings at Manawa, WI
Title:  Smooth Grade Crossings at Manawa, WI
Description:  Looking south, southwest along the recently removed CN, former GB&W, rails at S. Bridge St./Hwy. 22/Hwy. N at Manawa, WI on 30 Nov. '15. The building on the right was once National Condensed Milk Co. and it used to receive rail service. A photograph from 1908: http://www.mainstreet-marketplace.com/images/wismanawa.jpg; and from 1974: http://www.flickr.com/photos/77797698@N04/6859911396/. The tracks used to continue to the left, cross Bridge St., and end at Sturm Foods (currently a subsidiary of TreeHouse Foods), which received rail service until a couple of years ago. The residents of Manawa, WI have had their complaints of rough grade crossings addressed. Unfortunately the solution does not seem to bode well for the future of rail service there in the near term. On the drive toward Manawa, I was thrilled to see the red flag at Northport had been removed, but my elation suddenly turned to disappointment as I pulled into Manawa on this day.
