Album Info:The Oyster Bay Branch was something of an anomaly. It was a backwater of the system, a lightly trafficked branch in an otherwise busy system. It diverged from the Main Line at Nassau tower in Mineola, running through Roslyn and Glen Cove before reaching the end of the line near its namesake bay. I lived and worked near it, so covered it fairly well.

FA on the rear
Title:  FA on the rear
Description:  The usual pattern for trains having a power pack was to put the FA on the west end. This one is following that pattern as it brings up the rear of an Oyster Bay train making its stop at Roslyn.

Rounding the bend
Title:  Rounding the bend
Description:  An eastbound Oyster Bay train comes around the curve at Nassau, the tower to the right of the last car, having left the Main Line after making its Mineola stop. It will make all stops to Oyster Bay, save for Mill Neck. An MP 15 and two cars was not uncommon for a train that will work most of the off peak mid day hours at that time. View is from a westbound trains FA power pack.

Title:  Early in the morning
Description:  An FA power pack and what will eventually replace many of them, an MP 15, stand in the yard at Oyster Bay. The MP 15 will lead a later train. The FA will go out shortly, with me riding the left hand seat as part of a LIRR program to familiarize riders with the diesel operations on the railroad, a PR program that they did in 1979.

LIRR 171
Title:  LIRR 171
Description:  Oyster Bay trains almost always got a diesel on the rear to supply hotel power to the train, either an FA power car, or one of the MP15s that could act as either a locomotive or power car. Here, MP 15 171 does the honors, seen rolling away from Mineola after clearing Nassau interlocking onto the branch.

Westbound at the station
Title:  Westbound at the station
Description:  The better known station of the two in Glen Cove was Glen Street. It was adjacent to NY 107, and also was featured in a Maxwell House commercial in the late 70s/early 80s. The Glen Cove station was a more attractive building, but back in town, and did not get the exposure. Heres a westbound Oyster Bay train making a stop there.

CW Post-founded with money from the cereal magnate-was by then part of the Long Island University system. One omission on the sign is the NY Chiropractic College, which was adjacent to CW Post just to the east on NY 25A.

By the tower
Title:  By the tower
Description:  Long Island had a number of towers still in service in the 80s. One of the busier ones was Nassau, just east of the Mineola station. It controlled a pair of crossovers west of the station, and the junction with the Oyster Bay Branch, as well as the interlocking at Locust Valley, where the branch goes to single track. At one time, it also controlled the switch to the line that went down toward Hempstead along Franklin Av in Garden City, which curved to the right of the building with the ivy at far right. That line was abandoned in the 1960s. We see a westbound Oyster Bay train coming off the branch behind power pack equipped MP 15 172. It will make its stop here, then run into Jamaica for NY and Brooklyn connections.
