#800165 KANSAS
Description:
Built in 1950 by P-S in Lot #6856 to Plan #7600 as D&RGW 52 seat chair #1240, 1 of 67 such cars built in that Lot, which was part of a large 215 car order jointly placed by C&O and NKP in November 1946. This order consisted of Lots #6840 and #6853-#6867. 195 of these cars were ordered by C&O and 20 by NKP. The NKP order included an additional 5 52 seat chairs, built in Lot #6840 to Plan #7600A. An additional 5 cars were tacked on in April 1947 for a total of 10; these cars were delivered in February 1950 as #100-#109. As passenger ridership dropped and long-term plans changed, C&O sold a number of cars in September 1948 to 3 roads: the B&O, IC, and Rio Grande. The Rio Grande acquisition consisted of head end cars, sleepers, and 8 chairs, which were delivered in June 1950 as #1240-#1247. The 59 chairs initially retained by C&O were delivered concurrently as #1610-#1668. C&O further reduced their fleet by cancelling 7 cars in October 1948 and selling additional cars after delivery: in 1950, additional cars were sold to IC, NYC, and ACL; in 1951 and 1957 to B&O; in 1957 to C&NW; in 1958 to SAL; in 1959 to MP; and the last sale of cars by C&O was in 1969 to SCL. Upon delivery in 1950, the #1240 was moved into the shops, and emerged in 1951 as business car #100, which was named in 1956 as the WILSON MCCARTHY. Of the other 7 chairs, Rio Grande sold 5 in 1967 to D&H, which resold them in 1971 to Venezuela, and the other 2 were sold in 1970 to PC, which were acquired in 1974 by Amtrak. Besides those 2, Amtrak also acquired all 10 of the NKP chairs in 1971 (4 from SCL [sold to ACL in 1964] and 6 from the N&W [via merger]); 9 from C&O; and 10 from SCL (sold to SAL in 1958). The #100 later became property of Rio Grandes new parent company, ANSCO, which also owned nee-SP&S dome sleeper CALIFORNIA and buffet lounge IOWA (later renamed UTAH). ANSCO renamed the car KANSAS. All 3 cars were used to provide first class service on the SKI TRAIN, and after ANSCO sold the Temp SKI TRAIN consist to the Algoma Central, retained these 3 cars, which are now based in California. UP #5412
Description:
Built in 1950 by P-S in Lot #6844 to Plan #7617 as UP 44 seat leg rest chair #5412, 1 of 50 such cars (#5400-#5449) built in that Lot, which was ordered in February 1948; cars were delivered between June and September 1950. Besides the #5400 which was sold in 1951 to the Wabash (as #1431) and the #5446-#5449 which were rebuilt to business cars, UP sold the remaining 45 cars between 1969-1971. In 1969, 11 cars (including the #5412) were sold to GTW and converted to commuter coaches #4807-#4817, with either 74, 84, or 92 seats. The #5412 was converted to GTW #4807, with 74 seats. In 1977, the GTW commuter fleet was transferred to the new Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority (SEMTA), including these 11 cars, which retained the #48xx-series numbers. When SEMTA ended operations in 1983, 10 of these 11 cars were sold to Ringling Brothers; the #5412/#4807 was the only car not sold to Ringling. It was acquired by Artrain at an unknown date and converted to a display car. Artrain later acquired several Budd cars for a new trainset, and the old trainset, including the #5412, 2 B&O heavyweight coaches, and an ex-AT&SF baggage formerly owned by Ice Capades went to IRM. Under SEMTA, at least 2 of these 11 cars received names, at this time I have no info regarding the application of a name to the #5412/#4807. For more info on the earlier Artrain consist, see this page: http://web.archive.org/web/19991013045318/http://pages.hotbot.com/arts/artrain.3lakes/trains.html. For more info on the 1950 P-S built UP chairs, see Don Strack's website: http://utahrails.net/pass/pass-numbered-6.php#chair-5400. EXIF: 4:20 PM, f/5.6 @ 1/250

From right to left, these 3 cars are the DLMX #5659 GORDON N. ZIMMERMAN, PNWC #6800 RED RIVER, and NRM #2955 JAMES J. GILMORE. DLMX #5659 was built in 1954 by AC&F in Lot #4094 as UP baggage-messenger #5659, 1 of 25 such cars (#5639-#5663) built in that Lot, which was ordered in November 1952; cars were delivered between August 1953 and May 1954. This Lot was part of a 90 car order placed by UP in November 1952; this order also included 30 chairs and 35 domes. In addition, 8 cars of this type (#5631-#5638) were built in Lot #3810, which was ordered in May 1951; these 8 cars were delivered at the same time as the Lot #4094 cars, for a total of 33. Also, C&NW owned 2 cars of this type (#8900 and #8901) which were built in Lot #3842 for the Overland Pool; the Lot was ordered in August 1951 and the 2 cars were delivered in October 1953. The 33 UP cars were reassigned to express freight service in April 1969 with #244xx-series numbers, the #5659 as #24427. Besides 1 car which was wrecked in September 1969, these cars were again reassigned in 1970 as MofW tool cars; the #24427 was renumbered to #904227 in March of that year. The #904227 was retired and sold in July 1997 to the Friends of the 4449 as DLMX #5659 with the name BETTER IDEA. In 2003, the car was repainted in SP DAYLIGHT colors and renamed GORDON N. ZIMMERMAN. PNWC #6800 RED RIVER was built in 1950 by AC&F in Lot #3125 as GN 9 seat lunch counter-12 seat dinette-20 seat parlor observation #1147 RED RIVER; the car was ordered in July 1946 for the St. Paul-Grand Forks RED RIVER and delivered in May 1950. In 1953, the number of parlor seats was reduced from 20 to 16. In 1963, the car was rebuilt to a 68 seat coach (as #1147), with the name RED RIVER removed and the end squared off with a second diaphragm. The #1147 was repainted and renumbered as BN #6800 before being sold to Amtrak in 1971, retaining the BN number. The #6800 was retired in November 1977 and sold in 1978 to the Southern California Passenger Corporation in Santa Barbara. Great Western Tours acquired the car in 1980 as GWT #568, and it was later repainted in SP DAYLIGHT colors for use with the SP #4449 on the 1984 WORLD’S FAIR DAYLIGHT to New Orleans. The Pacific Northwest Chapter NRHS acquired the car from GWT in April 1986. NRM #2955 JAMES J. GILMORE was built in 1941 by P-S in Lot #6638 to Plan #7419A as SP 19 seat lounge 22 seat parlor observation #2955, 1 of 2 such cars (#2954 and #2955) built in that Lot for the COAST DAYLIGHT; the Lot was ordered in August 1940 and the 2 cars were delivered in July 1941. In 1963, the #2955 was rebuilt to 72 seat coach #2297, but unlike GN #1147 RED RIVER, the observation end remained unchanged. In 1971, the #2297 was sold to the Stockton Terminal & Eastern RR, and was later acquired by ORHF Vice President Ed Immel as NRM #2955. NRM is the reporting mark for Immel’s Northwest Rail Museum, which is not in any way related to the Northwest Railway Museum of Snoqualmie, WA. EXIF: 2:46 PM, f/2.7 @ 1/250
