Eastbound at Folsom
Title:  Eastbound at Folsom
Description:  In December 2023, I went to visit a good friend in Belen, NM. I didnt get to see much the first day out, but the second day of the trip was quite productive. I stayed at the Amarillo KOA, which is within sight of the Transcon. I saw a westbound holding, and went out to shoot the standing train. As I pulled up to the crossing, an eastbound was approaching, a pair of GEs with 46 stack platforms and 33 TOFC in tow.

Last light
Title:  Last light
Description:  I went on through Mountainair, not seeing anything, and toward Scholle, at the top of Abo Canyon. This westbound was stopped at Kayser, along a cliff. There was a conveniently placed pull off, and I was able to get a decent shot. Id see two more once in the Rio Grande valley, but too dark by then to get a shot. This was a nice close to an interesting day.

Blowing past
Title:  Blowing past
Description:  The eastbound gets up to track speed-70 MPH-as it meets the westbound. There must have been another eastbound in the picture, as the westbound stayed put. I was on a road with no shoulder, so could not stay there, and had to get a move on anyway. But it was a good start to the day.

Redemption
Title:  Redemption
Description:  I ran I 40 west to Santa Rosa, then US 54 to Vaughn, then west on US 60 to reach Belen. I shot five trains on UPs ex Rock Island/SP line, and missed one, then started in earnest on the BNSF. My first encounter was an eastbound near here, just east of Encino. I saw the train coming out from under the US 60 overpass at the bottom of the hill, fogetting that BNSF runs their trains like theyre being chased by a fire breathing dragon, and missed the shot by the time I got turned around to get to the spot I wanted. Five minuted later, this eastbound showed up, and I was able to get this shot across the steppes, with Pedernal Mountain in the distance.

Title:  Wide open
Description:  The same eastbound at Encino, this time in a wider angle view of its three units, 96 freight, and three stack platforms. The train is almost dwarfed by the landscape, showing why a long lens is an important tool in the west.

Westbound canned

Description:  I saw several westbound trains that seemed to be stashed in sidings along the way, though the eastbounds came at me on a regular basis, unfortunately, right out of the sun most of the time. This grain train is waiting at Lucy.

Out of the sun
Title:  Out of the sun
Description:  There is a small pull off with a historical marker along US 60 at Silio, where I stopped for a brief break. While there, an eastbound appeared out of the sinking sun with three units and 180 or so cars silhouetted against the landscape, which was now starting to show the mountainous terrain after miles of open plains. I'd spend til Monday morning with friends in Belen, then start my return. Photos from the two days in Belen are in the Two Mornings at Belen album.

The day begins
Title:  The day begins
Description:  I started back for home mid day on Dec 11, taking NM 47 to US 60. My first encounter was with a pair of trains at the NM 47 crossing, known as Sais. This westbound, with an eclectic mix of 60 freight, 39 stack platforms, 8 autoracks and two articulated racks, has just met a double move, a stack train with an oil train coupled up to the rear. I figured to catch him at the top of Abo Canyon. Not to be, I did get him at Mountainair, but othrwise, it was a futile chase. The Ferromex unit was a common sight on trains here.

Westbound and folly
Title:  Westbound and folly
Description:  I ran across this westbound stack at Lucy, pulling off mostly deserted US 60 to get the shot. You can go a long way out here and not see anyone for a long time, yet for some reason known only to God and NMDOT, the road is posted 55 MPH. Idiocy!!

Long trains meet
Title:  Long trains meet
Description:  The westbound in the previous shot approaches as the combined stack and oil train heads for Abo Canyon. Id hang a few minutes to shoot the westbound, but the eastbound, as big as it was, would beat me to the top of the canyon at Scholle.

Coal waiting
Title:  Coal waiting
Description:  Back in Amarillo, I got out and was about to head east for home, but thought Id check out the "other" BNSF in town, the former Fort Worth & Denver, which, unlike the ex Santa Fe Transcon, sees a lot of coal. It does see some merchandise and intermodal traffic, but mostly a lot or Wyoming coal. This was one of several coal trains I caught there that morning, shuffling power for the run east on the FW&D.

Here it comes
Title:  Here it comes
Description:  East of Pampa, the tracks are away from the road for a little over 20 miles, as both highway and railroad go through a significant elevation change, around 500 feet. As the tracks drew back to the road, I caught the tail end of a westbound going around a nearby hillside a good distance below me. The view as I came into the valley Miami sits in was panoramic. If only....I was to be handsomely rewarded: six trains in the next hour. The first to show up was this westbound freight, with 109 cars and 5 auto racks trailing its three units. . I got him down low, then followed up the hill to the west to get an elevated view.

Cows may safely graze
Title:  Cows may safely graze
Description:  A typically pastoral Texas scene is laid out in front of me, as a small herd of cattle graze in the company of an ex Santa Fe reefer, and a high plains icon, the windmill, complete the scene. The cows seem unaware of the action unfolding near them, or the Bach cantata Im referencing as this scene plays out.

They aint all scenic wonders
Title:  They aint all scenic wonders
Description:  One of the great things about taking US 60 east out of Amarillo is that the road follows the tracks, within sight, pretty much all the way to Pampa. Its not always terribly scenic, but you do see a lot of trains. Mostly, I just pull to the side and grab a shot, since chasing is out of the question, even with the Texas 75 MPH speed limit. This westbound was splitting the signals at Cuyler, five units leading.

Joint Line coal
Title:  Joint Line coal
Description:  I had finished my chase of UP 4014 the day before, and was now starting home after spending a couple hours on the RTD in the morning. As I approached Castle Rock, I saw this coal train over on the Joint Line, and got off to get a couple of shots. It was holding at a signal, so easy pickings here.
