The former ATSF station, quite large for the size of the town its in, now is the American Legion hall here. There is also a monument to the fallen residents of Ellinwood at the east end of the parking lot. We are grateful for their service, especially for those who gave all in that effort. |

I was driving around Hastings looking for a place to eat, when I crossed over what looked like an abandoned right of way in town. Maps I had looked at showed the UP Marysville Sub going through town, but the line I saw bypassed it to the east, crossing over the BNSF ex Q main on a bridge. I followed the line a couple of blocks and came across this magnificent building, once along the UP, now on a bike path. Im often dubious about removing rail lines in favor of trails, but in this case, it was a good idea. Passenger trains on the UP here gave up long ago, and Im sure the locals appreciate not having the numerous trains, may of them coal, not rolling past their homes. |

A fairly typical structure for the KCS is this part deck girder, part through truss bridge over Baron Creek. There is one similar to it over the Illinois River 15 miles to the north at Watts. I cant figure out why they would build a bridge that is part truss, part deck, and not one type all the way across. |

This is the KCS bridge over the Illinois River just north of Watts. Its an easy shot from the adjacent US 59 bridge, as I have done here. During the record flooding of May 2017, water was up to the bottom beam, and about 1/2 mile of track was washed out. On a quiet night, I can hear northbound trains working into Siloam Springs as they come off the bridge, which is about six miles from my house. |

The Arkansas & Missouri took over the Frisco 6th Sub from Monett South to Ft Smith, and got a short branch to Bentonville in the deal. The line was intact as far as the east edge of town til about a year ago, when they started taking up the track west of Dixieland Rd, where they serve the Glad Bag plant. Dont know how long the tracks have been gone from the station, but long enough that theres not much evidence left. The station, however, looks good. |

At one time, McGehee was a big place on the Missouri Pacific, with lines going in several directions from the Little Rock-Alexandria LA main. One of them went out to the Mississippi River, another south to Tallulah LA, on which this rice elevator is located. It appears there was once a siding to the right of the building. The line is now run by the North Louisiana & Arkansas, which sometimes stations a switcher here. |

This station is not in its original location. The tracks are on the west side of US 69, where Im waiting at the light. The station was once over near the tracks. MKT wanted to tear it down, but Wagoner wanted it as a part of its history, so it was moved to the opposite side of the highway. It's looking a little worse for wear nowadays. There is a caboose and a coach beyond, out of this photo, as well here. |

GR&I was a Pennsy subsidiary that ran from Richmond, Indiana up through Fort Wayne to Grand Rapids, and eventually to the Strait of Mackinac. It had a seasonal passenger traffic flow, as people would vacation in the northern part of Michigans lower peninsula. Now its mostly abandoned, and a bike/snowmobile trail. See the photo in this album of the bridge and trail from Stanwood Mich. This was Decaturs other station, the main one being the now gone Erie station, which was on their Jersey City-Chicago main, a line now long gone, though a small portion of it still exists here as a switching lead. |

While on my way up to Quivira NWR, I drove through Pratt, something I had done many times before, but either on K 61 or US 54/400. I had not, til now, come up US 281 from Oklahoma. I had always thought of Pratt as a Rock Island town, which it is. I had no idea there was a Santa Fe station there, too. The building is in good shape, and is currently occupied by a couple of non rail businesses. The track, on the other hand, looks like its not see action in quite some time. Were looking east in this view. |

A pair of Kanza Coop elevators in Iuka, Kan, which had been on the end of a Missouri Pacific branch that is now abandoned. As the rail network was rationalized over the years, a process accelerated following deregulation in the 1980s, there are now many elevators such as this, still serving their purpose, only now served by truck as the railroads abandoned the light density lines they were on. |

Well, more grain, just none of it by rail. Many smaller elevators did not have enough volume to keep rail service competitive once unit trains became prevalent, and the railroads didnt help matters by pricing the small moves so that they were uneconomical. Elevators like this could not keep up and went to trucks. The trucks went to elevators that could take advantage of volume rates, driving off business. That allowed many lightly trafficked branches to be abandoned, such as this ex Santa Fe line in Hardtner Kan. |

One of the other buildings we encountered during our day in Tulsa was the Union Depot, which was built in 1931 to consolidate the Frisco, MKT and Santa Fe stations in the city. Santa Fe was last to use it, in 1967, the MKT having discontinued service there in 1965, the Frisco in 1964. This is a dark side view of the east end of the building. | Description: |
The track side of the station. There were originally five tracks in the station, two of which served mail and express. At its peak, the station served 36 trains a day. Now there are just the two main tracks of the BNSF Cherokee Sub, and a couple of stub end sidings. The lower level is fenced off from the railroad. |
