Album Info:Bangor is at the head of the tide on the Penobscot River. It was an important seaport and railroad town a hundred years ago. At one time railroads such as The Maine Shore Line, The Bucksport and Bangor, and The European & North American joined the northern termuns of the Maine Centeral here. The Bangor and Aroostook came into town over MEC tracks from Northern Maine Junction during the passenger years to handle business at Union Station. Except for the BAR all of these railroads operated as individual entities for just a few years before being leasted to & then purchased by the MEC. Today, except for a couple of sidings PAR operates just a single track thru the city. Not so many years ago there was a large yard and double track. Perhaps these scenes will show a bit of the glory and slow decline of years past. A Tip of the Hat to the R&LHS's Spring 1985 issue of Railroad History for details on the steam locomotive roster. And, most importantly, thanks to the railfans of yesteryear who took these scenes. They deserve a place beyond a dusty shoe box on a top shelf in someone's closet........ /DL

Description:  This pure MEC perspective won't be around for long! The power is destined for a new livery – black with a reo stripe – & the locomovive service area & nearby round house have a short life ahead. This scene was taken 6 or 7 years into the Guilford era. Today a single track runs by here and all of the!large Bangor Yard is gone except a couple of sidings at the old Union Statnon site. I suggest viewers go to Bangor, Maine and fly to the north west side of the I-395 bridge. Inside the westbound off ramp loop the round house stalls can be clearly qeen!!! This photo was taken just to the north of the turn table! A tip of the hat to tne author, J David Ingles who granted permission to post his work here. /DL

Freight Yard

Description:  The MEC Freight house & station were in the middle of this frame back in the 70s. The round house was to the left near in the distance near the new Interstate Bridge & the street in the foreground is 'Railroad Street'. /DL

Freight Yard

Description:  This is a contempoary shot from the middle of the old MEC Freight Yard looking east (north). Today Bangor has turned this into a river side park, a project that was just getting underway when this photograph was taken. The white sign under 'Yard Limit' says 'BANGOR' on a post beside what looks like part of an old track scale. /DL

Passenger Yard looking westbound

Description:  A contemporary look at the former passenger yard. This shot is from the new Penobscot River Bridge looking south & taken near sunrise on a slow Summer Sunday morning. The camera is quite close to where the north end of the passenger car shed roof once was. Although not visible in this perspective close inspection reveals a string of cement foundation supports running parallel with the pavement under the trash containers. Union Station was to the right beside the switches. /DL

Description:  From the other side of the bridge used in the previous photo. The bridge handles the Bucksport Branch traffic today. #167 in the 1952 photo was working the distant end of this yard just beyond the overpass in this scene. The Passenger Shed was behind the camera to the left. Calais Jct. is behind the trees about 1/2 mile away. /DL

Description:  When this was two track it was often used as a switch lead for the freight yard just around the bend. There used to be several sidings in this area, one went in front of the SeaDog Brew Pub to the left. This view is looking time table west. /DL

Waterworks

Description:  This contemporary scene looks eastbound just north of Eastern Maine Medical Center. The rear of the passenger train plowing through the flood waters was center frame in this scene 106 years earlier. It is nearly the same perspective of the 1904 postcard.... /DL
